“Designing for now, respecting the past, with a careful eye on the future.”
01/ Conservation
At Runcorn Architects, we have a passion for heritage work (works to listed buildings and within conservation areas). Indeed, Tom is currently working towards becoming a RIBA Conservation Architect (and is an RIBA Conservation Registrant now). Being based in Rutland, we are surrounded by a huge variety of listed buildings and numerous conservation areas, meaning we have a wealth of experience in this area. When working on heritage projects we offer a tailored solution recognising a standard approach doesn’t work – every project is different. Listed buildings inevitably face different issues; need of modernisation, repairs, renovations, and much more.
Runcorn Architects specialises in conservation and listed building projects, offering a full range of architectural services for the repair and restoration of historic buildings, including sensitive design of new buildings, extensions and alterations to listed buildings and within conservation areas.
“Breathing new life into historic buildings, creating spaces that add to the soul of the property.”
We are particularly skilled in combining sensitive additions to listed buildings which integrate modern technologies, to make buildings environmentally sustainable and fit for modern purposes.
02/ Sustainability
We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. Like it or not we are facing a climate emergency, and the construction industry and built environment has a huge role to play in combatting this. We design for immediate needs whilst ensuring future requirements will also be met – not just by doing the right things for the planet but crucially also saving client budgets (better insulated homes, reducing bills and reliance on fossil fuels, and more). At Runcorn Architects, we are signatures of ‘Architects Declare’ and are signed up to the RIBA’s 2030 Challenge. As part of our push to be more sustainable we are committed to the following as a business:
- Aiming to be a zero-waste company. Whilst this is a tough ask, we have reviewed where we buy products/ supply chains for the office and teamed up with TerraCycle to ensure as much of the office waste produced as possible is recycled. TerraCycle is an innovative recycling company and a global leader in recycling hard-to-recycle materials.
- Solar panels power the office and charge our 100% electric car. All possible site visits/ journeys are taken in the electric car or via public transport where possible.
- In association with Ecologi we plant trees monthly and for each project. The aim here is not to carbon offset but to help reforest keys areas around the world. Healthy trees sequester CO2 making them climate champions.
- Working with Ecologi Zero and its carbon foot printing tool we are working to better understand our carbon footprint and, in doing so, working to reduce our footprint step by step.
Nothing is perfect when it comes to responding to the climate emergency, but any steps we take are a step in the right direction!
